Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and the Improvement After.
Researchers got 718 patients together who were electing to have Endoscopic Sinus Surgery to manage their chronic rhinosinusitis and conducted a survey on them to see if the procedure reduced antibiotic usage. While it is known that Endoscopic Sinus Surgery provides a better quality of life for those suffering with chronic rhinosinusitis, the study was done to see if the procedure impacts the usage of antibiotics.
503 patients completed both the before and after Chronis Sinusitis Surveys which was a six-item, duration-based, sinus-specific outcome instrument developed to measure both medication and symptom aspects of rhinosinusitis. The patients also kept track of how much medication they were taking during these times.
Patients showed a significant improvement and needed less antibiotics after the procedures. The percentage of patients that reported significantly less antibiotic usage was a little over 60%. This survey shows that patients undergoing Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for chronic and recurrent acute rhiniosinusistis use significant less antibiotics.
